What is Semaglutide?

Semaglutide belongs to a class of medications called Glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. Semaglutide is the active ingredient in medications such as Ozempic, Wegovy and Rybelsus. Ozempic and Rybelsus are used in patients with Type II Diabetes Mellitus to lower blood sugar and reduce risk of cardiovascular events. Wegovy, combined with a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity, is used in patients for weight loss. Semaglutide works on lowering blood sugar levels and has an effect on how the stomach empties.

How is Semaglutide administered?

Semaglutide is administered via a small needle into the subcutaneous fat once weekly. Common areas of injection are the abdomen, inner thigh or upper arm. The dosing can be adjusted every 4 weeks until you reach your target weight. The maximum dose is 2.4 mg/week.

What are the potential benefits of Semaglutide?

Weight loss, reduced cravings for food and lowered blood sugar.

What are the potential adverse effects?

In clinical studies, the most commonly reported adverse effects were nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation and abdominal pain.

Who should not receive Semaglutide?

We do not recommend clients receive semaglutide who have a personal or family history of Medullary Thyroid Cancer (MTC) or those with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). We also don’t recommend clients with a personal history of pancreatitis receive Semaglutide.

Do I need laboratory evaluation prior to the treatment?

We ask that you have your most recent laboratory results from your primary care provider or specialist available for review. If you are unable to provide laboratory results, we will order the appropriate laboratory studies at the time of the consultation.

Why do I need a consultation prior to starting therapy?

The purpose of a consultation is to evaluate and determine whether you are an appropriate candidate for Semaglutide weight loss therapy. This will include a physical examination, measurements, a review of your weight loss treatment and journey to date, establish goals and create a plan.
